Open Kitchen Vilnius
If the traditional Lithuanian dish cepelinai (‘Zeppelins’), large boiled potato dumplings with fillings of minced meat or cottage cheese, or the šaltibarščiai (cold beetroot soup) doesn’t inspire you, then the eclectic mix of food on offer at the Open Kitchen Vilnius might. Located just down the river from the arty Uzupis, the food truck market is open every Friday during the summer months. Food trucks from local city restaurants are serving the best of their menu.
The atmosphere is chilled, there is a mixed crowd and the beer flows freely. Locals, tourists and families mingle in this busy place. It’s a great option for those friends who can’t agree on a ‘cuisine’ it’s easy, go your separate ways, choose your food and meet at the shared tables cleverly made out of old pallets. Then, of course, live music dominates the centre, with changing bands and a DJ spins the decks throughout the day.
The Food…
Big Vilnius names serve gourmet burgers with delicious toppings and hot dogs to die for. If you’re in the mood for something spicier there are a few Mexican trucks serving the obligatory taco and quesadillas. For those wanting a healthier alternative, there is a BBQ meat option. In addition, trucks serve filled pittas and giant pies. Or perhaps choose a vegetarian dish. However, if all you want is dessert, they have that covered too… a waffle to die for, topped with Nutella and strawberries.
So, how will you choose what to eat? We looked for the longest queue because surely the food must be worth the wait!
As for the beer… well, you are in Vilnius so undoubtedly it’s going to be good. However, the queues were huge for the Raudonų Plytų Alaus Dirbtuvės (RPAD for short), stand. They serve 4 different beers on tap and at 3 Euros a pint it is good value. Also, there were soft drinks and a coffee truck for the drivers…
Ultimately, if you are in town on a Friday during the summer months, take a walk down to the Open Kitchen Vilnius. Grab yourself a box full of loveliness, a cold beer and relax in the sunshine. (Well 2 out of the 3 may have to do.)
